Visakhapatnam Prays for Ex-Navy Officer's Release in Qatar

In a distressing turn of events, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, a native of Visakhapatnam and an expert in defense and strategic studies, is among eight ex-Indian Navy officers who have been sentenced to death by a court in Qatar. The news has sent shockwaves through his family and the Visakhapatnam community.

Commander Sugunakar's family, consisting of his wife, son, and daughter, is still grappling with disbelief and sorrow, unable to come to terms with this sudden and grave development. The local community, close relatives, and friends have rallied around them, offering much-needed moral support during this trying time.

Amidst the heartache, there is a glimmer of hope. The family is holding onto the belief that the Indian government's intervention could secure Commander Sugunakar's release before his upcoming birthday on December 18.

Sugunakar, 54, retired from the Indian Navy in November 2013, marking the end of a distinguished career. A proud alumnus of Korukonda Sainik School in Vizianagaram, he served in various naval postings across the country, including Mumbai, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Visakhapatnam. His dedication and commitment earned him commendations from the Navy chief on several occasions.

Sugunakar's educational journey was equally impressive. After his time at Korukonda Sainik School, he continued his studies at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, where his father served as the principal. He joined the Navy at a young age of 18, eventually earning a BTech in mechanical engineering from the Naval College of Engineering and a master's degree (MSc) in defense and strategic studies from the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.

As Commander Sugunakar Pakala's fate hangs in the balance, his family and the community in Visakhapatnam hope for a swift and positive resolution to this harrowing situation, as they hold onto their enduring faith in his innocence and the support of the Indian government.
