Visakhapatnam Railway Station Redevelopment Gains Pace

Redevelopment work at Visakhapatnam Railway Station is gaining momentum, with railway authorities pursuing infrastructure upgrades aimed at handling growing passenger traffic and improving the travel experience.

The proposed station modernisation includes expanding the existing eight platforms to 14 platforms, along with upgraded passenger amenities and improved connectivity within the station complex.

Coaching-Yard Remodelling to Increase Capacity

Indian Railways has also approved a ₹299-crore remodelling project for the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard. The project includes:

  • Construction of six additional platforms

  • Addition of six railway lines

  • Widening of existing platforms

  • Installation of electronic interlocking systems

  • A new entrance on the eastern side of the station

  • Improved surface parking and passenger circulation

  • Ramps, lifts and escalators to improve accessibility

The remodelling is intended to reduce operational bottlenecks, improve platform availability and minimise train detention caused by existing track arrangements.

Improved Passenger Facilities

The redevelopment plans also focus on making the station more convenient for passengers through better access, circulation and modern facilities. The proposed eastern-side entrance is expected to improve access for passengers approaching from the Gnanapuram side.

The expansion is intended to support the station’s growing role as a major railway terminal in the region and improve its ability to handle additional train services.

A Major Railway Hub for North Andhra

Visakhapatnam Railway Station has evolved significantly since it began operations in 1896. It now serves as a major passenger hub for Visakhapatnam and the wider North Andhra region.

The redevelopment and yard-remodelling works are expected to strengthen the station’s capacity and support future growth in passenger and railway operations.
