The Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led alliance candidate, Mrs. Mukka Sravani Garu, is set to become the next Mayor of Visakhapatnam after emerging victorious in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) elections.

Her victory marks a significant political development in the city and a setback for the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which fielded Varudu Kalyani as its mayoral candidate.

According to reports, the YSRCP has begun an internal review of its election performance, seeking to assess the factors that contributed to the party’s defeat.

Sravani’s Political Journey

Mrs. Sravani Garu, a doctor of physiotherapy by profession, joined the TDP in 2015 and entered active politics. She was elected as a corporator from Ward 26 in the 2021 GVMC elections.

Her family has a long association with the TDP. Her father, senior party leader Sri Mukka Mutyala Naidu Garu, has been associated with the party since its formation in 1983.

Her grassroots-level work as a corporator and long-standing party association were reportedly among the factors behind her selection for the mayoral post.

YSRCP Begins Internal Post-Mortem

The YSRCP’s internal review is expected to examine its campaign strategy, candidate selection, organisational performance and voter response across the city.

The election outcome presents a major challenge for the party as it evaluates its position in Visakhapatnam and prepares for future political contests.

Focus on Civic Governance

With Mrs. Mukka Sravani Garu set to assume the mayoral role, attention will now turn to the new GVMC leadership and its approach to the city’s civic priorities, including roads, drainage, sanitation, drinking water supply and public amenities.

The new administration will be expected to address residents’ everyday concerns while guiding Visakhapatnam’s continuing urban development.
