Visakhapatnam to Get 100 Electric Buses Under PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme: Key Updates

On August 1, 2024, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs addressed an unstarred question raised by Shri Sribharat Mathukumilli in the Lok Sabha regarding the implementation of the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme in Visakhapatnam.

The scheme aims to enhance the city's public transportation by introducing electric buses, which will contribute to sustainable urban mobility and reduced carbon emissions.

According to the official response from the Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Tokhan Sahu, Visakhapatnam is eligible for central assistance to deploy up to 100 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. However, the Ministry has not yet received a formal proposal from the State Government of Andhra Pradesh for this deployment. The central assistance is contingent upon receiving such a proposal, which would allow further steps to be taken in operationalizing these buses in the region.

The introduction of electric buses under the scheme is part of the broader efforts to modernize public transport infrastructure, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and improve air quality in urban centers like Visakhapatnam. The Minister’s response also highlighted the future scope of expansion, which is closely linked to infrastructure development, availability of charging stations, and government cooperation at both the central and state levels.

The PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme is a step towards revolutionizing public transport in Visakhapatnam, ensuring a greener and more efficient urban mobility system. The Ministry remains committed to supporting the region’s transit evolution once the necessary proposals are in place.
