Visakhapatnam's Junction Beautification Project Sparks Controversy

Visakhapatnam, the Jewel of the East Coast, has been buzzing with mixed sentiments lately as the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) initiated a grand project to beautify five of its key junctions. While the endeavor is aimed at enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal and aligning with the smart city development plan, two of these junctions, Akkayapalem and Railway New Colony, have become subjects of controversy.

The project, with an estimated cost of ₹5 crore, aims to transform these junctions into picturesque landmarks. However, it appears that not everyone is on board with the concept. Local residents and the city's traffic police have expressed their concerns, fearing that this ambitious project might lead to increased traffic congestion at these already busy intersections.

Both residents and the traffic police lament that GVMC did not seek their opinions or suggestions before embarking on this journey of beautification. They stress that collaborative planning would have been more conducive to the city's overall well-being.

As we delve into the community's views, it's clear that many question the priorities of the GVMC. Some believe that this substantial investment could be better directed towards addressing pressing civic issues or improving crucial infrastructure, such as the flyover near Dwarakanagar junction.

GVMC Deputy Mayor G. Sridhar urges the public to exercise patience, assuring that the project is part of a decentralized city development initiative. He also mentions an exciting addition, a steam engine sponsored by the Railways, set to grace Railway New Colony Junction.

While the debate continues, one thing is certain: Visakhapatnam's transformation is a topic that touches the hearts of its denizens. With more open dialogue and a shared vision for the city's future, it's possible to strike a balance between beauty and functionality.
