Vizag and the Entire AP to Witness the Heatwave from Tomorrow: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Andhra Pradesh is once again bracing for a fresh spell of heatwave conditions, according to the Indian Meteorological Department's Amaravati regional center. The heatwave is expected to prevail over parts of north and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Yanam, starting May 14. Maximum temperatures in many parts of the state are predicted to go beyond 40 degrees Celsius, and there is little chance of rainfall activity for at least the next four to five days.

The dry and hot north-westerly winds blowing across the state are responsible for the rise in mercury levels and the continuation of the heatwave. On Friday, the highest temperature of 43 degrees Celsius was recorded at Jangamaheswarapuram in Palnadu district, and many parts of the state are already experiencing hot and dry weather conditions.

Visakhapatnam, being the largest city in the state, is also expected to be impacted by the heatwave. With its proximity to the Bay of Bengal, Vizag typically experiences relatively cooler temperatures. However, the IMD has warned that the city may witness maximum temperatures during the heatwave.

Heatwaves can pose a significant risk to human health, and it is important for people to take the necessary precautions to stay safe. Here are some measures that people can take to protect themselves from the heat:

Stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day: The period between noon and 3 p.m. is typically the hottest time of the day. People should try to stay indoors during this time and avoid going out unnecessarily.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other fluids like coconut water, buttermilk, and lemon juice to stay hydrated and cool. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, as they can cause dehydration.

Wear loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing: Wearing loose-fitting clothes made of light-coloured fabrics can help keep the body cool. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes and dark-coloured clothing, as they absorb more heat.

Use sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and preferably SPF 50 to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Take cool showers: Taking cool showers can help bring down the body temperature and provide relief from the heat.

Elderly people, pregnant women, children, and people with chronic illnesses are more susceptible to the effects of heatwaves. Check on them regularly and ensure that they are staying cool and hydrated.

The IMD's warning of a heatwave in Andhra Pradesh should be taken seriously, and people should take the necessary precautions to stay safe. By following the above measures, people can protect themselves from the adverse effects of the heatwave and enjoy a safe and healthy summer.
