Vizag Port Ranks in Top 20 of World Bank's Container Port Performance Index

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Port has achieved a significant milestone by breaking into the top 20 rankings of the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI).

The terminal operator, Visakhapatnam Container Terminal Private Limited (VCTPL), secured the 18th place on this prestigious list, marking a notable accomplishment in port efficiency and operational performance.

The CPPI measures quayside performance, focusing on how efficiently ports receive and handle container ships. This index is crucial for customers in selecting ports and terminals, with key metrics such as port efficiency and ship turnaround time playing a vital role in their decisions.

VCTPL has demonstrated outstanding performance with a Key Performance Index (KPI) of 27.5 moves per crane hour, a turnaround time (TRT) of 21.4 hours, and an idle time at berth of just 13%. These achievements highlight the coordinated efforts between the port and its terminal operators in delivering exceptional service to customers, according to Visakhapatnam Port Authority Secretary T. Venugopal.

Dr. M. Angamuttu, Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), commended the terminal operator and the port community for their hard work. He noted that the container terminal serves as a crucial gateway for Nepal-bound containers and accommodates around 65 container lines, including main shipping lines and NVOCCs. The port offers eight regular vessel services—FME, IFX-2, MDM, CHS, CI7, CCG, IEX, and CVK—covering routes to East, West, and Middle Eastern destinations.

The overall performance of public-private partnership (PPP) operators is measured and rewarded according to the Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 guidelines. In recognition of this achievement, VPA plans to reward VCTPL.

Additionally, VPA has reported impressive performance in cargo throughput for the fiscal year 2023-2024. The port secured the 4th rank among major ports in India and made a significant leap to 3rd place in the first two months of FY 2024-25, reflecting a 13.5% growth in cargo throughput.
