Vizag to Launch Clean Air Zones from July: A Major Step Towards Pollution Control

In a landmark move towards improving urban air quality, Vizag is set to introduce Clean Air Zones (CAZs) starting next month. The initiative aims to combat rising pollution levels by implementing targeted emission reduction strategies and creating green infrastructure in select areas of the city.

According to officials, several neighborhoods—including the busy King George Hospital (KGH) junction—have been identified for the initial phase of the Clean Air Zone rollout. These areas experience some of the highest traffic congestion and pollution levels in the city.

Under the CAZ program, multiple interventions will be employed:

  • Traffic management to reduce vehicular emissions.

  • Promotion of public transportation and non-motorized transport.

  • Increased green cover through plantations and urban forestry.

  • Strict monitoring of industrial and construction emissions.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) will coordinate with pollution control authorities, traffic police, and public transport agencies to ensure smooth implementation of the program.

Environmental experts have welcomed the move, citing the importance of proactive measures in rapidly urbanizing coastal cities like Vizag. “Air pollution is becoming a serious concern. Initiatives like CAZ will not only improve air quality but also enhance public health and urban livability,” said Dr. Ramesh Rao, an environmental scientist.

If successful, the project is expected to be expanded to more areas across the city in subsequent phases. The Clean Air Zones initiative marks a significant step in Vizag’s journey towards becoming a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban center.
