Widespread Microplastic Contamination Found in Vizag Seafood: Andhra University Study Raises Alarms

A recent study conducted by Andhra University has uncovered alarming levels of microplastic contamination in seafood sourced from the Vizag coast, raising serious concerns over marine pollution and its impact on public health.

The research, which focused on commonly consumed marine species including fish, prawns, and shellfish, found that a significant percentage of the samples contained microplastic particles. These particles—typically originating from single-use plastic waste, fishing nets, packaging materials, and synthetic fibers—enter the marine ecosystem through runoff, improper disposal, and industrial activity.

The findings highlight a pressing environmental and public health issue. According to researchers, microplastics ingested by marine organisms can enter the human food chain, potentially leading to long-term health effects such as hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and increased risk of chronic illnesses.

Dr. M. Srinivasa Rao, the lead researcher of the study, emphasized the urgent need for policy interventions. “This is not just an environmental concern but a food safety crisis in the making. The government must prioritize plastic waste reduction and improve coastal waste management systems,” he stated.

In response, environmental groups have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of plastic bans and the promotion of sustainable alternatives. The study also recommends public awareness campaigns and regular monitoring of seafood quality in coastal markets.

With Visakhapatnam being a major seafood hub, the implications of this study are far-reaching—not only for local consumers but also for national and international seafood trade originating from the region.
