Amazon India Partners with Vizag Tribals to Promote Indigenous Produce Online

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering tribal artisans in Visakhapatnam, Amazon India has teamed up with the local tribal communities to facilitate economic opportunities, preserve cultural heritage, and promote community development.

Under the 'Karigar' program, Amazon India has signed an agreement with the tribals of the Visakhapatnam forest.

This partnership focuses on comprehensive training for tribal artisans, covering value addition, packaging, and branding, ultimately enabling them to sell their produce online and reach a global market.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to fostering indigenous craftsmanship, promoting cultural exchange, and enhancing livelihoods.

By leveraging the rich heritage and skills of the tribal communities, Amazon aims to offer authentic handcrafted products to a worldwide audience, aligning with their mission to positively impact and serve these communities.

As part of this effort, an e-commerce hub will be established within the tribal areas of the Visakhapatnam forest.

This hub will serve as a crucial center for various activities, including primary and secondary packaging, storage, dispatch, and order processing.

Gaurav Bhatnagar, Director of Seller Acquisition and Development at Amazon India, highlighted that this partnership supports the socio-economic empowerment of tribal communities while preserving their traditional knowledge and upholding the legacy of age-old traditions.

District Forest Officer (DFO) Anant Shankar elaborated on the benefits, stating that the partnership will enable the tribal communities to showcase their craftsmanship to a broader audience and improve their living standards.

Initially, the project will focus on the online sale of non-consumable forest produce, such as grass weaving for mats, paper made from elephant dung, and bamboo supplies.

This initiative aims to provide visibility and support revenue generation for the tribals' forest produce, significantly contributing to their socio-economic development.
