The Andhra Pradesh government has ordered strict enforcement of environmental regulations governing the sale and use of firecrackers during Deepavali, with particular attention being given to Visakhapatnam's air quality.

In an order issued on November 6, Principal Secretary for Environment and Forests Kantilal Dande directed the concerned departments to ensure compliance with Supreme Court guidelines on the manufacture, sale and use of green crackers.

The decision follows a request from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), which sought stronger enforcement measures ahead of the festival.

Only Approved Green Crackers Permitted

The government has emphasised that only approved green crackers should be manufactured, sold and used in accordance with applicable regulations.

District administrations and police departments have been directed to monitor compliance and take action against violations.

The instructions are intended to regulate firecracker-related pollution while allowing residents to celebrate the festival responsibly.

Visakhapatnam's Air Quality Under Focus

According to the APPCB, air-quality and noise-level monitoring during previous Deepavali celebrations showed significant increases in particulate matter concentrations, particularly in Visakhapatnam.

The pollution-control board has therefore called for stronger preventive measures to minimise the impact of festival-related emissions on public health.

Multiple Departments Asked to Coordinate

The APPCB has forwarded the government's directions to departments dealing with municipal administration, transport, roads and industries for necessary action.

Authorities have also been asked to address other pollution sources, including:

• Vehicular emissions

• Road dust

• Industrial emissions

• Biomass burning

• Other seasonal sources of air pollution

The board will continue monitoring ambient air quality and coordinate enforcement activities with local authorities.

Public Cooperation Essential

With Visakhapatnam among the areas receiving particular attention, authorities are expected to strengthen inspections and public awareness campaigns during the festive period.

Residents are advised to purchase approved green crackers from authorised outlets and follow the applicable safety and environmental regulations.

The initiative aims to reduce pollution during Deepavali and protect public health as the city enters the winter season.
