In an inspiring initiative ahead of Diwali, 85 students with disabilities in Visakhapatnam have demonstrated their creativity and entrepreneurial abilities by making and selling decorative clay lamps.
The initiative, conducted under the brand name “Visakha Khushi Deep,” was organised by Prajwal Vani Welfare Trust. The students procured traditional earthen diyas directly from the potters’ colony in Visakhapatnam, decorated them with colourful designs and participated in marketing and sales activities across the city.
Their efforts generated a collective income of ₹42,585, showcasing how creative opportunities can encourage participation and self-confidence.
From Handmade Diyas to Entrepreneurship
The students decorated traditional clay lamps using vibrant colours, including red, green and blue. After completing the artwork, they helped promote and sell the products at shopping malls, apartment complexes, high-rise residential communities and public spaces, including Beach Road.
The initiative gave participants an opportunity to experience different stages of a small business, from procuring materials and creating products to marketing and selling them directly to customers.
Students Receive Recognition for Their Efforts
As a gesture of appreciation, each participating student received a cheque of ₹501 from the proceeds.
Dr. Suchitra Balakrishna, founder and president of Prajwal Vani Welfare Trust, said the programme was designed to build confidence through art and provide children with a sense of achievement.
Parents also expressed happiness over their children's involvement in the activity and their opportunity to contribute to the festive celebrations through their own work.
Promoting Inclusion and Self-Confidence
Beyond the financial earnings, the initiative highlights the importance of providing students with disabilities opportunities to develop practical skills, interact with the community and showcase their abilities.
The project demonstrates how creative activities and community support can help young people build confidence and participate more actively in society.
Through “Visakha Khushi Deep,” these students have added a meaningful message to Diwali celebrations in Visakhapatnam — that talent, creativity and determination can shine in many different ways.
