Andhra Pradesh To Experience Intense Summer Heatwaves this Summer

As Andhra Pradesh prepares for the summer months ahead, forecasts indicate a challenging season characterized by above-normal temperatures and prolonged heatwave conditions, attributed primarily to the influence of El Nino.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) and the Rayalaseema districts are expected to bear the brunt of this harsh weather pattern, with elevated minimum or night temperatures anticipated.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings, projecting an increase in the number of heatwave days not only in Andhra Pradesh but also in neighboring regions such as Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha.

This prediction follows the trend from the previous year when Andhra Pradesh witnessed the highest number of heatwave days in South India.

After a monsoon deficit and a dry winter, the IMD's latest forecasts suggest that the summer of 2024 will be notably severe. With March to May identified as the critical period, residents across the state are urged to brace themselves for above-normal maximum temperatures and an extended duration of heatwave conditions, particularly in CAP.

Dr. S Karuna Sagar, a scientist at IMD-Amaravati, emphasized the significance of El Nino in driving these extreme weather patterns.

The onset of hot days is expected to commence as early as the first week of March in certain regions, with heatwave conditions likely to intensify by the end of March.

Already, daytime maximum temperatures in many areas of the state have begun to soar, ranging between 35-38°C, indicating the impending heatwave season.

As the summer progresses, vigilance and precautionary measures will be crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of the anticipated heatwaves on both the populace and the environment.
