Visakhapatnam’s long-term water security is expected to receive attention during Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s September 19 visit.

The discussions come as Vizag’s water requirements are expected to increase with urban growth, industrial development and the proposed expansion of data-centre infrastructure.

The Vizag Development Council has proposed a “Visakhapatnam Water Security Mission 2047”, drawing on Singapore’s integrated water-management approach.

The proposed strategy includes four major sources: existing surface-water reservoirs, Godavari water through the Polavaram Left Main Canal, recycled wastewater and desalinated seawater.

The proposal also calls for better utilisation and scientific management of reservoirs such as Yeleru, Raiwada, Tatipudi, Meghadrigedda, Mudasarlova and Gambheeram Gedda.

Another proposal is to use treated wastewater for industries, data centres, power plants, construction and landscaping, while prioritising fresh water for drinking purposes.

Authorities are also examining additional storage options, including balancing reservoirs, to strengthen the city’s water reserves.

The State has separately been discussing the use of Polavaram water and additional storage and desalination facilities to diversify Vizag’s water sources.

 

The September 19 visit could therefore provide further direction on the city’s long-term water-security planning.
