Commissioner GVMC Dr G Lakshmisha commuted from his residence to the GVMC office on Monday

GVMC Commissioner Dr G Lakshmisha and other employees on Monday reached the office riding bicycles. Entry was denied into the GVMC office for employees with bikes and cars.

Commissioner GVMC Dr G Lakshmisha commuted from his residence to GVMC by bicycle in view of the "Free Vehicle Zone" policy implemented by GVMC to curb air and noise pollution. The move is essential from a health as well as environmental point of view.

On June 5, GVMC banned the usage of single-use plastic on the occasion of World Environment Day under corporation limits. Now, GVMC announced that major tourist spots as plastic-free zones.

The GVMC opened an eco-bazaar on the beach road on June 5 to offer cloth/jute bags and other environment-friendly products at subsided prices to drive the public towards plastic alternatives. Vizag produces about 1,000 tonnes of waste daily, of which plastic constitutes about 200 to 300 tonnes.

Every household below the poverty line state will be given two cloth bags from GVMC free of cost. The GVMC is conducting a series of meetings with key city stakeholders, including NGOs, resident welfare associations, and women's self-help groups, to seek their cooperation to make the ban successful.
