Expert Advocates Brain-Engaging Activities to Delay Dementia Onset
Dementia affects approximately 90 lakh individuals above the age of 60 in India, according to Dr. N.N. Raju, a distinguished psychiatrist and former Superintendent of the Government Hospital for Mental Care.
He stressed that engaging in brain-stimulating activities can be an effective means to postpone the progression of dementia.
Dr. Raju outlined several strategies to help delay brain degeneration in individuals with dementia. These include activities like solving puzzles, engaging in physical exercises to enhance blood flow to the brain, and refraining from alcohol and smoking.
He shared this valuable insight during an awareness program on 'Memory-Forgetfulness,' organized by the Kausalya Counselling Centre, which coincided with World Alzheimer's Day. The event took place at the Public Library in Dwarakanagar on September 21 (Thursday).
Dr. Raju emphasized that any noticeable change in the behavior of individuals over the age of 60, such as struggling with routine tasks like buttoning a shirt or expressing unfounded fears of the unknown, should raise suspicion of dementia.
Moreover, he highlighted that individuals with lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes should exercise increased caution, as they are at a higher risk of developing dementia in their later years due to reduced blood supply to the brain, which accelerates the degeneration process.
Explaining the mechanics, Dr. Raju pointed out that two minuscule brain regions, the hippocampus and amygdala, located beneath the cortex, play vital roles in learning, information storage, processing, and retrieval. When the brain sustains damage from disease, injury, or gradual aging, dementia can manifest.
Dr. Raju revealed the alarming statistic that around 90 lakh Indians over the age of 60 are currently grappling with dementia. He highlighted that World Alzheimer's Day is observed annually to raise public awareness about this condition, with this year's theme being "Never too early, never too late."
