GVMC Plans Ambitious New Office Complex at Mudasarlova
Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a spacious new office building in the Mudasarlova area of the city.
The proposed office complex is set to occupy approximately two lakh square feet (sft) on an expansive six-acre site, with an estimated worth of 50 crore.
According to initial plans, the new structure is envisioned to rise to a height of four or five stories above ground, but the basement will be designed to accommodate a building complex extending to eight or nine floors, sources have revealed.
The need for a new office building arises from the limitations of the current GVMC main office, located at Asilmetta Junction, opposite Jail Road. The existing premises, covering an area of 2.25 acres, were originally designed for a ground plus three-storied building, with no provisions for vertical expansion. Furthermore, there is no available space for horizontal expansion.
The current building is already overcrowded, housing various departments, including town planning, revenue, health, engineering, Urban Community Development (UCD), as well as offices for elected officials and senior executives.
The existing GVMC office was constructed back in 1979, before it was upgraded to the status of a corporation. A facelift was given to the building during Nagulapalli Srikanth's tenure as commissioner, and it underwent further changes when the Municipal Corporation of Vizag (MCV) was elevated to Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) in 2005.
The present GVMC office once accommodated 50 corporators, led by NSN Reddy, during the early 80s when he served as the first mayor of the city's municipal corporation.
However, with the city's designation as a 'Greater City,' the number of corporators increased to 72 after the merger of areas such as Gajuwaka Municipality and 32 peripheral areas in 2007.
In recent years, the city limits expanded further with the inclusion of Bheemili and Anakapalli municipalities and the merger of five panchayats. Consequently, the number of divisions increased to 98, placing additional demands on the GVMC's infrastructure.
The planned construction of a new, spacious office complex at Mudasarlova reflects the GVMC's commitment to accommodating the evolving needs of the city while providing a more efficient and modern workspace for its staff.
