GVMC Receives Two National Awards from the Central Board of Irrigation and Power
The Central Board of Irrigation and Power presented the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) with two national awards. GVMC received these awards for its efforts in the water, renewable energy, and power sectors, where it has worked to optimize and efficiently use water resources while reducing waste in water and electricity consumption. This achievement came after GVMC began involving various government departments, local bodies, corporate bodies, and others in non-conventional power generation such as solar and wind power.
On Friday, the awards were given to the organizations and government departments that performed the best in their respective departments and achieved the desired results for the year 2022. On March 3, 2023, GVMC officials received these awards from Union Minister of Power and Renewable Energy RK Singh in Delhi.
One award is for best practices in water resources, as the GVMC has been supplying water to 25,000 houses as part of its 24/7 water supply project, and plans to increase that number to 60,000 houses in the near future. The GVMC is currently saving 2.83 million liters per day because the supply has decreased from 15.22 million liters per day to 12.39 million liters per day as a result of the implementation of this 24/7 water supply project. As a result of this accomplishment, the GVMC received an award in the category of best water consumption and supply.
Another award has been given to the GVMC's Water Resource Project for solid water management and sewage water treatment for reuse via the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The GVMC has been supplying treated water from the Narava STP to HPCL, and from the Marikavalasa STP to Jindal Power Plant, among others. The Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) bestowed not one, but two of these prestigious awards on GVMC in recognition of these contributions.
