Kona Srikar Bharat - The City of Destiny's Pride
Kona Srikar Bharat is a name that Vizag is not only familiar with but also proud of. In 2022, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) appointed him as the Environmental Brand Ambassador of Visakhapatnam. This Vizag lad started playing cricket at a young age. He was a naughty and mischievous kid who would often break the window glasses of his neighbors' houses while playing gully cricket. It was then that his father, Mr. N. Srinivasa Rao, a Naval Dockyard employee, decided to enroll him in a cricket academy. He just started playing cricket for fun and to escape from school. Who would have thought that this naughty Vizag kid would now make the city proud?
Making his first-class debut in 2013 against Kerala, this wicketkeeper-batsman can bat up the order. Interestingly, he took up wicketkeeping only at the age of 17 when his team required a keeper-batsman. In February 2015, he became the first-ever wicketkeeper-batsman to score a triple century in the Ranji Trophy. In the same month, he got picked up by the Delhi Daredevils for the base price of Rs 10 lakhs in the Indian Premier League auction, but he didn't get an opportunity to play.
He got his India call-up in November 2019 as a cover for Wriddhiman Saha for India vs. Bangladesh test series. He was brought in by the RCB for the 2021 IPL season, in which he scored well in the top order. He scored 191 runs in 8 games at an average of 38.20 and a strike rate of 122.43. It was his six of the last ball in a match against DC that drew attention, as he hit a six towards long on Avesh Khan's low full-toss ball, which helped his side win the match. He got his ODI call-up in January 2022 for an ODI series against Australia.
In the IPL 2023 auction, the defending champion Gujarat Titans (GT) bought this Andhra Pradesh wicketkeeper-batsman for Rs 1.20 crore. The Chennai Super Kings made the opening bid, but GT snagged him during the bidding. He is now ready for the Test cap, as he is set to play in the Australia Test series in February- March. In 2023, Vizagites wish that Bharat will make his mark with his performances and make it an impressive year.
