Leprosy-Linked Disabilities in Visakhapatnam Surpass National Average, Study Reveals

A recent medical study has revealed an alarming trend in Visakhapatnam: the rate of disability among newly diagnosed leprosy patients in the city exceeds the national average. Out of 68 confirmed cases analyzed, 14% of patients were found to have disabilities at the time of diagnosis. Particularly concerning is the Grade II disability rate, recorded at 9%—significantly higher than the national average of 7.7%.

Grade II disabilities refer to visible deformities or damage to limbs, often leading to lifelong impairment. These findings indicate that patients are seeking medical attention only after the disease has progressed to a critical stage.

Health experts attribute this trend to a lack of awareness about early symptoms, stigma surrounding leprosy, and delays in accessing healthcare facilities. Despite advancements in treatment and government programs promoting early detection, societal fear and misinformation continue to hinder timely diagnosis.

Medical professionals and public health officials in Visakhapatnam are urging the public to stay informed, recognize symptoms early, and seek prompt treatment to prevent complications. Campaigns for community education and free screening camps are being recommended as immediate interventions to curb this concerning trend.
