On September 2nd, the world celebrates World Coconut Day
The Asian Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), of which India is a member, observes World Coconut Day. The APCC is comprised of all major coconut-growing countries with its headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia. Coconut is a member of the drupe family and the tree is commonly referred to as the "tree of life" in the Asia-Pacific region.
"Growing Coconuts for a Better Future and Life" is the theme for this year. This day is observed to make people aware of the value and benefits of coconuts, which are the most versatile fruits in the world. Its uses range from food and beverages to oil, cosmetics, and decoration.
The Sanskrit word for coconut tree is "Kalpavriksha," also known as the "tree of heaven" because it provides everything needed for survival.
Coconuts are thought to have originated in the Indo-Malayan region, and India ranks third in the world in coconut production with 21207 million nuts in 2020-21, accounting for approximately 34% of global production.
