Visakhapatnam: Residents of Thotagaruvu, Visakhapatnam, protested on Tuesday against the allocation of a two-acre plot to Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu for establishing a badminton academy, advocating instead for the land to be used for a junior college.
The previous YSRC government had allotted this land, previously under the animal husbandry department in Chinagadili mandal, to Sindhu in June 2021 for a combined badminton academy and school. Former corporator Ommi Sanyasi Rao argued that while three acres were allocated for a high school, an additional two acres requested by locals for a junior college were assigned to the academy.
“We’re not against granting land to Sindhu, but it could be allotted elsewhere so this area can serve educational purposes for the local youth,” Rao stated.
The initial land grant was subject to strict conditions, emphasizing it could only be used for the academy and not commercial ventures. The sports and youth affairs department is set to transfer the land once specific requirements, including academy registration and three years of IT returns, are fulfilled.
