State Authorities Embrace Advanced Laser Speed Guns to Enhance Road Safety in Vizag
In an effort to bolster road safety, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) in Visakhapatnam is set to acquire cutting-edge laser-based speed guns.
The focus is primarily on deploying these sophisticated devices along selected road stretches, particularly highways, to monitor and curb instances of speeding, ultimately aiming to reduce accidents caused by overspeeding.
According to RTA officials, an alarming 70 percent of road accidents and over 75 percent of road accident fatalities have been attributed to overspeeding over the past few years.
The recently published "Road Accidents in India, 2022" report revealed that in the state, 6,760 individuals lost their lives, and 17,050 sustained injuries due to overspeeding-related road crashes.
While the authorities have been utilizing over 20 speed guns to monitor vehicle speeds, the inadequacy of this number and occasional defects in the equipment have prompted the decision to acquire at least 20 more advanced laser-based speed guns.
The objective is to intensify efforts to curb overspeeding and consequently reduce the fatalities resulting from road crashes.
A senior RTA officer acknowledged the challenge of enforcing speed regulations and preventing negligent driving round the clock, especially with limited infrastructure and manpower.
Additionally, the absence of speed limit display boards on certain road stretches has been identified as a contributing factor to vehicle overspeeding.
Officials emphasized the need to raise motorist awareness regarding road conditions and speed limits as a preventive measure against road crashes.
Highlighting the local scenario, Vizag city Police Commissioner Dr. A Ravi Shankar stated that the city records a daily average of 100 speed violation cases.
Acknowledging the prevalence of high-speed driving beyond permissible limits (ranging from 40 to 80 kmph), he announced plans to acquire additional advanced laser-based speed guns for strict enforcement, with the goal of preventing incidents of overspeeding.
