Successful Mock Drill Conducted at Petrochemicals Unit in Visakhapatnam
In Visakhapatnam, the Andhra Petrochemicals Limited (APL) orchestrated a comprehensive off-site mock drill in collaboration with various governmental bodies and emergency response teams.
Coordinated with the district administration, Factories Department, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and several other agencies, the drill aimed to simulate a chemical disaster scenario and assess the readiness and effectiveness of emergency response protocols.
The mock drill scenario unfolded with the sounding of an emergency fire alarm at 9:17 am, simulating a propylene gas leak from the flange of a remote operating valve on a propylene storage vessel.
The APL emergency communications team swiftly notified the district collector, A. Mallikarjuna, who promptly mobilized the necessary district authorities to manage the emergency situation.
Various firefighting teams, including those from HPCL, CIL, BPCL, VPT, and EIPL, alongside the district fire services, quickly responded to the incident with eight fire tenders.
These teams collaborated effectively to combat the simulated fire, demonstrating the importance of mutual aid and coordinated efforts in crisis situations.
As part of the drill's evacuation procedures, 25 simulated injured persons were safely evacuated from the incident area with the assistance of APL, NDRF, and other rescue teams.
Six ambulances facilitated the transportation of the injured to nearby hospitals, including KGH, ensuring timely medical attention.
Additionally, a rehabilitation center was established at Hindustan Shipyard to accommodate approximately 106 individuals from nearby areas, emphasizing the importance of post-disaster support and community resilience efforts.
The successful execution of the mock drill underscores the commitment of all involved parties to preparedness and safety in the face of potential chemical disasters, highlighting the importance of regular training and collaboration in mitigating risks and ensuring public welfare.
