Tamil Cinema Mourns the Loss of Actor-Politician Captain Vijayakanth

On December 28, 2023, the Tamil film industry and political landscape were shaken as Captain Vijayakanth, renowned actor and founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), breathed his last.

The 71-year-old icon, affectionately known as Captain, succumbed to complications arising from pneumonia while on ventilator support, following a battle with illness that spanned several years.

Vijayakanth had been admitted to the hospital a few days prior for a routine check-up, only to be diagnosed with a COVID infection.

Despite the efforts of the medical team, the news of his passing spread, leaving the Kollywood fraternity and fans in shock. Fellow actors took to social media to express their condolences for the departed star.

The DMDK's official statement indicated that Vijayakanth initially sought medical attention for a regular health check-up. Subsequently, the diagnosis of COVID and the necessity for ventilator support due to respiratory distress marked the final chapter in the life of this versatile artist and political figure.

The hospital's official announcement read, "Captain Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia and was on ventilator support. Despite efforts by the medical team, he passed away in the morning of December 28, 2023."

In a gesture of tribute, morning shows across Tamil Nadu cinemas were canceled by the TN Exhibitors Association.

Vijayakanth, distinguished for exclusively acting in Tamil films throughout his career, showcased his versatility through roles spanning various genres.

Although he gained popularity as an action hero, his filmography boasts over 20 films where he portrayed the role of a police officer, many of which became massive hits.

Among his notable contributions to Tamil cinema are films like "Sattam Oru Iruttarai," "Nooravathu Naal," "Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal," "Oomai Vizhigal," "Captain Prabhakaran," "Pulan Visaranai," "Chinna Gounder," "Sethupathi IPS," "Honest Raj," and numerous others. Captain Vijayakanth's legacy will forever endure in the hearts of those who cherished his on-screen charisma and admired his contributions to Tamil cinema and politics.
