Visakhapatnam Port Ranked Fourth Among Major Ports and Second on the East Coast in Cargo Handling

Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) is ranked fourth among major ports and second on the East Coast. The port handled 73.73 million metric tonnes in the financial year 2022-23, a significant increase from the previous year's 69.03 million metric tonnes. The port's use of a landlord model is one of the major factors contributing to its success. Three public-private partnership (PPP) projects have already been awarded a total investment of Rs 655 crore, and two more are nearing completion. The port earned an additional Rs 119 crore from the EQ1 and 6 berths, while three berths were given for mechanization, generating an additional Rs 288 crore.

Chairman K. Rama Mohana Rao believes that allocating work through the PPP method will result in more technology imports, higher income, and lower costs for the company. The port is also taking steps to reduce pollution resulting from cargo storage. In addition to growth in various aspects, the VPA has also registered a decline in cargo handling in thermal coal and iron ore pellets due to various reasons.
The VPA has also leased idle land for 30 years to generate additional revenue and jobs. Leasing 17 acres of land that had been idle for eight years in Saligramapuram resulted in an additional Rs 125 crore in revenue and the creation of 10,000 jobs. Overall, the VPA's success can be attributed to its use of the landlord model, the use of PPPs, and efforts to reduce pollution. As the port expands, it is expected to make even greater contributions to the Indian economy.
