Chief Secretary Jawahar Reddy Sets January 2024 Deadline for Vizag Metro Rail Technical Evaluation

Visakhapatnam: State Chief Secretary, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, has issued a directive to concerned authorities, including Vizag Metro Rail and the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA), to conclude all pending technical evaluation work for the Vizag Metro Rail project by January 2024.

This announcement came during a comprehensive review of various projects and programs held at the VMRDA office located at Siripuram Junction. In attendance were officials including VMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner A. Mallikarjuna, AP Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director U.J.M. Rao, and GVMC Commissioner C.M. Saikanth Varma.

Mr. Rao shared details about the Vizag Metro Rail project, which will consist of 'Light Corridor' and 'Modern Corridor' segments, divided into four parts. These sections include the route from Vizag Steel Plant to Kommadi, Gurudwara Junction to Old Post Office (second), Thatichetlapalem to China Waltair (third), and the fourth leg extending from Kommadi to Bhogapuram International Greenfield Airport. Mr. Rao emphasized the need to commence metro rail project work at the earliest.

During the review, the Chief Secretary sought updates on various projects undertaken by VMRDA and GVMC. He learned that VMRDA's jurisdiction in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh covers an area of 6836.15 square kilometers, with a master plan already approved for 4380.67 square kilometers.

A draft Master Plan for the remaining 2455.48 square kilometers needs to be prepared, which was promptly directed by the Chief Secretary.

Visakhapatnam holds a special place in the country as it has been selected as one of the four cities for a pilot project, alongside Mumbai, Surat, and Varanasi. In light of this recognition, the Chief Secretary instructed officials to elevate Visakhapatnam into a unique destination with distinct theme projects and robust infrastructure facilities. The State government is committed to prioritizing the city's development.

To that end, the Chief Secretary outlined several projects to enhance Visakhapatnam's profile, including the National History Museum, Signature Tower, and Convention Centre at Kapuluppada, a Water Park along the Vizag-Bheemili road, Science City on Kailasagiri Hills, and a Kalavani Indoor Stadium fashioned after Hyderabad's Kalabharati.

He also emphasized the importance of developing green spaces and water bodies to address water-related issues and promote a clean and hygienic environment within the city.
