GVMC's Aerial Seeding Initiative: Restoring Ecosystem and Promoting Biodiversity in Visakhapatnam
In an earnest endeavor to restore the ecosystem and foster biodiversity, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has launched a green revolution across various parts of Visakhapatnam.
A key strategy employed in this ecological restoration mission is the innovative technique of aerial seed ball dropping.
The aerial seeding exercise aims to reach areas that are otherwise challenging to access, effectively dispersing seed balls over expansive landscapes. In collaboration with the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), the civic body has identified specific target areas for the distribution of these seed balls.
The first phase of the aerial seeding exercise, conducted on October 2, witnessed the successful dropping of 1.5 lakh seed balls across hilly terrains. Building on this achievement, the GVMC proceeded with the second phase on November 3, deploying Indian Navy helicopters from INS Dega to disperse an additional 50,000 seed balls.
The chosen areas for this phase included Pavuralakonda-1 and 2 at Bheemunipatnam, Kapuluppada, Simhachalam, Porlupalem hills, Vedullanarava hills, and Yarada.
Mayor G Hari Venkata Kumari highlighted the comprehensive strategy behind this initiative, emphasizing its role in conserving the environment, controlling pollution, and enhancing forest cover in Visakhapatnam. Aiming to augment the city's green cover, the GVMC's approach aligns with a broader vision for sustainable urban development.
A crucial aspect of the initiative is the collaboration with Green Climate, an environmental conservation NGO actively involved in preparing seed balls. Comprising a mixture of clay, compost, and seeds, these seed balls are strategically scattered in target areas.
Post-dispersion, the seed balls rely on natural processes for germination, harnessing moisture from rain to sprout and contribute to the revival of greenery.
This proactive effort not only addresses the challenges posed by climate change but also underscores the significance of community collaboration in achieving environmental sustainability.
