GVMC's Summer Relief Initiative: Setting Up Kiosks and Shelters
In preparation for the scorching summer ahead, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has announced plans to establish temporary water kiosks and shade shelters throughout the city to offer respite from the sweltering heat.
During a review meeting held at the GVMC office, Additional Commissioner KS Vishwanathan highlighted the need for these measures, citing official statements from the IMD forecasting higher heat intensity compared to the previous year.
Under the directive, shelters will be strategically placed every three kilometers along national highways and every one kilometer along major roads. Additionally, they will be set up near railway stations, bus stations, bus stops, markets, Rythu bazaars, and parks, equipped with shade and seating for pedestrians to rest comfortably.
To ensure effective implementation, the GVMC will collaborate with NGOs and resident welfare associations, establishing control rooms with nodal officers in each zone operating in two shifts. Awareness programs targeting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and the sick will be conducted, with a special focus on water conservation and heatstroke prevention.
Furthermore, provisions will be made for water troughs to quench the thirst of birds and animals, while volunteers will conduct awareness campaigns at the grassroots level to promote community involvement and support in this endeavor.
