Milestone Achieved: Vizag Runway Resurfacing Project by Indian Navy
The Indian Navy's INS Dega in Vizag, a vital component of the city's aviation landscape since 1999, has reached a significant milestone with the early completion of its main runway resurfacing project.
This initiative, undertaken to meet the growing demand for aviation services in the rapidly expanding city, aims to boost the efficiency and safety of the airfield, accommodating both domestic and international flights.
Originally inaugurated on June 15, 2007, the 10,000-feet-long runway has served for over 15 years, witnessing a notable surge in traffic to nearly 75-80 movements per day.
Recognizing the need for an upgrade, the project commenced in November 2023, despite initial delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Remarkable efforts by the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command (HQENC) have led to the project's completion ahead of schedule, exceeding expectations.
To minimize disruptions to commercial operations, meticulous planning ensured that resurfacing work aligned with the Winter Schedule of Civil Aviation, with closure times limited between 9 pm and 8 am.
Demonstrating the Indian Navy's commitment to service, over 30 flights were accommodated beyond the scheduled hours, even during Cyclone Michaung, ensuring minimal inconvenience to Visakhapatnam's citizens.
With the completion of the crucial fourth layer of resurfacing, the runway has been cleared for usage by the inspection agency, which has praised the quality and efficiency of the work. HQENC proudly announces the resumption of round-the-clock operations at the Visakhapatnam runway from April 1, perfectly aligning with the summer schedule.
This achievement underscores the Indian Navy's dedication to maintaining operational readiness standards and its unwavering commitment to serving the nation and its citizens.
