Apartment complexes and gated communities across Visakhapatnam are facing increasing water shortages, with residents becoming more dependent on private and municipal water tankers as groundwater availability declines. The issue has become particularly noticeable in rapidly developing residential areas of the city. 

Areas such as Madhurawada, PM Palem, Yendada, Seethammadhara, Maddilapalem, Yendada, Arilova and Gajuwaka have reported water-related difficulties. In some residential communities, borewells have reportedly failed to provide sufficient water, forcing residents to arrange additional tanker supplies. 

The growing dependence on tankers is also increasing the financial burden on apartment residents. Some large gated communities in the city’s suburbs require multiple tanker trips each day to meet their water requirements, while residents have also reported difficulties in securing timely tanker supplies through municipal arrangements. 

The situation is linked to falling groundwater levels and the rapid expansion of residential developments, particularly along the Yendada-Madhurawada corridor. GVMC officials have previously noted that the growth of large gated communities has increased water demand faster than the supporting supply network. 

The growing water stress has also highlighted the importance of groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting. Some Vizag communities, such as Jagannadha Raju Nagar near Old Venkojipalem, have maintained dedicated rainwater harvesting systems and reported avoiding dependence on private tankers. 

 

The increasing pressure on water resources has brought renewed attention to the need for sustainable water management, improved supply infrastructure and groundwater recharge measures as Visakhapatnam continues to expand.
